Gerald N. Galstan Memorial Fellowship


This fellowship was established January 2001 by Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) in memory of Gerald N. Galstan, Senior Group Vice President, Manager of the Applied Technology Systems Group, and employee of SAIC for over 20 years. The fund provides research assistantship support for graduate students who are Computer Science majors studying software engineering.

  Synopsis of Mr. Galstan

 

Gerald N. Galstan retired from U. S. Navy with the rank of Commander after 20 years of service. He joined SAIC in the 1970s in Arlington, Virginia. Mr. Galstan found success at SAIC, moving his way up the ranks to manage a very large organization generating revenues of $50M per year. His success was owed in large part to his abilities to manage people, his abilities to manage highly technical programs, his ability to motivate employees, and his keen ability to communicate with/understand customers. Mr. Galstan also possessed the entrepreneurial spirit that is so common at SAIC. He fostered this in his employees.

 

 

  Benefits/Requirements of this Fellowship

o Fellowship pays 9-month tuition for the recipient
o Fellowship pays the recipient a stipend of $12,000 for 9-months

 


  Eligibility


This fellowship provides an opportunity for a Master's or PhD Computer Science major to perform research work with Dr. Jane Hayes in some area of software engineering. Applicants must be graduate-level students in Computer Science in good standing. Students that are just commencing a PhD degree are preferred, but Master's level students will also be considered.

August 2001 – May 2002:

Hong “Tina” Gao – Master Student in the Computer Science Department. She works with Dr. Hayes on Test Driven Development (TDD), a project that examines the plausibility of improving software development through a test-driven development approach.
